Updating Software and Assigning IP Addresses during Prestaging for Newly Manufactured MLC 8000 Devices

Prerequisites:

The MLC 8000 Configuration Tool is operational. See procedure Opening the MLC 8000 Configuration Tool.

When and where to use:

Use this process to assign an IP address from your IP Plan to an MLC 8000 device or a group of devices that is newly manufactured and to upgrade the software for the device or devices at the same time. The MLC 8000 device arrives with a default IP address that is used to connect the service computer/laptop directly to the device and configure the desired IP address. After you configure the device with your new IP address, you can access the device remotely through the IP network with a service computer/laptop.

Procedure:

  1. Prepare the PC you plan to use to provision the IP addresses. See procedure Preparing PC with MLC 8000 Configuration Tool for Prestaging Activities.
  2. Define a temporary channel cluster. See procedure Defining a Conventional Channel Cluster.
  3. Connect the PC to the new MLC 8000 device on which the IP address is being provisioned. See procedure Connecting to a New MLC 8000 Device External LAN.
  4. Upgrade the MLC 8000 device software. See procedure Updating Software on a New MLC 8000 Device.
  5. Provision the initial IP address for the device. See procedure Provisioning the Initial IP Address for an MLC 8000 Device.
  6. Repeat steps 3 through 5 for each MLC 8000 device for which the software should be upgraded and the IP address provisioned.
  7. Verify that the IP addresses were changed correctly. See procedure Verifying the IP Address Change.
  8. Optionally, delete the temporary channel cluster defined for upgrading the software and specifying the initial IP addresses during prestaging effort. See procedure Deleting a Conventional Channel Cluster.
